Forest of Reading

For grades 3-8, it might be difficult to acquire the books for the club. There are many different ways to get them:

  • from the HAWPS library learning commons (check out one at a time)

  • from your public library using your Milton Library card

  • download the OVERDRIVE app and read the books for free (need Milton Library card number and/or HAWPS library number to sign in)

  • purchase them from Indigo or another book store (last resort)

Blue Spruce

Forest of Reading @ Hawthorne Village PS

 

The Forest of Reading BLUE SPRUCE program starts in January.  We're excited to celebrate Canadian books, authors and illustrators by participating in this Kindergarten to grade 2 program.

 

For Kindergarten and Grade 1 students only, Mrs. Thorne will read each of the ten titles from this category during the weekly library sessions. Then we will vote on our most favourite one. Click the picture to the left to get more information about each of these great Canadian picture books. 

Silver Birch Express

The Forest of Reading SILVER BIRCH EXPRESS program starts  in January.  We're excited to celebrate Canadian books and authors by participating in this grade 3 and 4 program. This program is open to all grade 3 and 4 students.

 

The participating student will read at least 5 books by the end of April, attended a weekly book talk, and completed a book evaluation on each of the books read. We vote on our favourite book and have an ice cream sandwich PARTY!

 

The book club rules are:

  • read at least 5 books by the end of April

  • Attend the book club on Thursdays Second Break (bring your lunch)

  • Fill out the booklet given to you by Mrs. Thorne

Silver Birch Fiction and Non-fiction

The Forest of Reading SILVER BIRCH FICTION AND NON-FICTION program starts in January. We are excited to celebrate Canadian books and authors by participating in this grade 5 and 6 program. This program is open to all grade 5 and 6 students at Hawthorne.

 

To participate in the reading program, a student must read at least 5 books in one of the categories (e.g. fiction or non-fiction) by the end of April, must go to one book talk a week and fill out a book evaluation for each read book. 

 

The book club rules are:

  • read at least 5 books in one category (e.g., either Fiction or Non-Fiction) by April 20

  • Attend the book club on Fridays Second Break (Bring your lunch)

  • Fill out an evaulation for every book you read 

 

 

 

Red Maple

The Forest of Reading RED MAPLE FICTION AND NON-FICTION program starts in January. We are excited to celebrate Canadian books and authors by participating in this grade 7 and 8 program. This program is open to all grade 7 and 8 students at Hawthorne.

 

To participate in the reading program, a student must read at least 5 books by the end of April, must go to one book talk a week and fill out a book evaluation for each read book. 

 

The book club rules are:

  • read at least 5 books in one category (e.g., either Fiction or Non-Fiction) by the end  of April

  • Attend the book club on MONDAYS Second Break (bring your Lunch)

  • Fill out an evaulation for every book you read
