In 2015 we began our journey to transform our Library in a Library Learning Commons in order to make the space work better for the students and staff. With the support of administration and many staff, we successfully became leaders in innovation with learning, collaborating and Inquiry in our board. Please check out the slide show to take a peak into our fabulous Learning Commons. Better yet, come and visit HAWPS!

What HAWPS Teachers like to read

What is your favourite all time Children's picture book? Maybe you have a favourite chapter book from when you were in grade 4? Some of the Hawps Staff have contributed and told us which book was their favourite. Can you guess which teacher is which? How many of these books have you read?

Forest of Reading Program*

Begins Mid January

The Forest of Reading® is Canada's largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers eight reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest® helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually from their School and/or Public Library. All Ontarians/Canadians are invited to participate via their local public library, school library, or individually.

Here at Hawthorne Village Library, we will roll out the program each January. The grades K-2 will be participating in the Blue Spruce program and reading 10 Canadian picture books and voting for the best one. The Grades 3-4 will be participating and voting for the Silver Birch Express nominees. The Grades 5-6 will be participating and voting for Silver Birch Fiction and Non-Fiction. Finally, the Intermediate students wil be voting and participating in the independent and voluntary program of Red Maple

GOALS OF THE FOREST OF READING

  • To develop recognition for Canadian authors and Canadian books

  • To contribute to the financial stability of the Canadian publishing industry

  • To provide teachers, teacher-librarians, librarians, library staff and parents with a meaningful tool for improving literacy in schools and libraries

  • To respond to community interest and needs

The Blue Spruce® Award

(JK - Grade 2 picture books)  The Blue Spruce™ Award program brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to children between the ages of 4 and 7 (junior kindergarten to grade two).  For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books.  This program promotes reading for enjoyment and begins to develop a child’s skill in evaluating a picture book based on story, text and pictures. Voting will be in April.

The Silver Birch® Award

(Grades 3-6 fiction, non-fiction) The Silver Birch® Award is comprised of three separate lists: Fiction, Non-fiction and Express. Our Express list is made up of both Fiction and Non-Fiction titles, and is geared to the more reluctant reader. The Silver Birch® program is meant for readers aged 8 to 12, (grades 3-6,) with the Express list typically suited to readers in grade 3 and 4. Voting will be in April.

The Red Maple® Award

(Grades 7-8 fiction, non-fiction every other year) The Red Maple™ Award reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students ages 12 to 13, in Grades 7 and 8. This program includes a Fiction list every year and every other year Red Maple also offers a Non-Fiction list. This program aims to get readers engaging in conversation around the books and encourages them to use critical thinking while reading. Voting is in April.
